La emoción del misterio
“La experiencia más hermosa que podemos tener es la del misterio… Aquél a quien esta emoción le es desconocida y que ya no puede hacer un alto para maravillarse y entrar en un rapto de sobrecogimiento, está ya muerto, y sus ojos están oscurecidos. Fue la experiencia de misterio —aunque mezclada con temor— la que engendró la religión. Un conocimiento de la existencia de algo que no podemos penetrar, nuestras percepciones de la razón más profunda y de la belleza más radiante, que sólo son accesibles a nuestras mentes en sus formas más primitivas: es este conocimiento y esta emoción lo que constituyen la verdadera religiosidad. En este sentido y sólo en este sentido soy un hombre profundamente religioso… Estoy satisfecho con el misterio de la vida eterna y con un conocimiento, un sentimiento, de la maravillosa estructura de la existencia —así como del humilde intento de entender incluso una pequeña porción de la Razón que se manifiesta en la naturaleza”.
